GLEN COVE, NY (September 8, 2015) – The volunteers at Glen Cove Hospital not only generously contribute tens of thousands of hours of service each year to the facility, but they also recently donated $27,425 to the hospital for patient programs and services.
On behalf of the Glen Cove Hospital Auxiliary, Joy Leale, the group’s president, presented a “big check” to Susan Kwiatek, DNP, the hospital’s executive director, at the facility’s critical care unit.
“We are very grateful to members of the Auxiliary who help the hospital purchase equipment that enhances patient care and that we would otherwise not be able to provide,” said Dr. Kwiatek.
Ms. Leale said the Auxiliary received a “wish list” from administrators and has purchased or is in the process of delivering several items. The largest purchase is a digital retina camera outfitted with software to detect diabetic retinopathy, one of the most common eye diseases and a leading cause of blindness. The high-tech camera will be used in the Family Medicine Center, strengthening the hospital’s expertise in diabetes prevention and management.
Among the other items, the hospital bought a special lift used by nurses to safely transport patients from their beds to chairs. Patients in the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit benefit from four new iPads, which are used to help people with speech difficulties to communicate. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit received a patient-powered knee scooter to get around more easily.
The large donation was made possible by numerous fundraisers organized by the Auxiliary and sales from the hospital’s volunteer-run gift shop.
